Pendant lights are one of the most universal lighting fixtures for the home because they can be used just about anywhere and in any room in the house. These fixtures come in a number of shapes and sizes, but one thing remains the same: they all hang from the ceiling. One of the more common areas in the home to hang these pendant lights is in the kitchen, above the kitchen island and sometimes even over the kitchen table. When you're considering pendant lights above your island, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Size Really Does Matter.
Sizes of kitchen islands vary from home to home due to the size of the home and the preference of the homeowner. The number of pendants that your island needs will depend on the exact size of the island.
When Your Island Is Smaller…
If you have an island that is on the smaller end of the scale, then you should only need one pendant over the island. This is particularly true if you choose a pendant of a larger diameter, like around 16 to 18 inches. If you want smaller diameter pendants, such as 6 to 8 inches, you may want to consider hanging two fixtures. The main thing is ensuring that your workspace is fully illuminated so that you have a bright and clean area to work with.
When Your Island Is Longer…
If you have an island that is six to eight foot long or longer, then you are definitely going to need more than one hanging pendant. Because you are dealing with such a larger space, you want to divide the area into much smaller sections, which is done with multiple pendants. Let's say that your island is six feet long, you could divide it into two or three sections, depending on the diameter size of the pendants that you choose. You could choose 12- to 14-inch diameter pendants to divide the island into two sections or 6- to 8-inch diameter pendants for three sections. Again, the main thing here is to ensure the island is well-lit.
Once you are able to determine the number of sections you want, you can start searching for the perfect lighting fixtures to complement your kitchen décor. If you don't feel comfortable installing the pendant lights yourself, make sure to consult with a professional electrician ahead of time.
